Medical Transportation Volunteers

Behind every successful program at Island Senior Resources are volunteers whose stories deserve to be told. Our interview series shines a light on their unique contributions and the values they bring to our mission. Meet Clayton Granby, whose service and spirit inspires us all.
When Clayton Granby moved to Whidbey Island 12 years ago, he was searching for community, a place where people still looked out for one another. What he discovered was more than a home, he found purpose.
Clayton first began serving on the board for Hearts & Hammers, helping neighbors with home repairs. But the pandemic brought that work to a halt, he looked for another way to give back. That search led him to Island Senior Resources. In 2021, he joined the Medical Transportation program, and ever since, Clayton has been a steady, smiling presence carrying neighbors safely to and from their medical appointments.
What may seem like a simple drive is, for many of his passengers, a lifeline. Clayton sees it every week, the relief in someone’s eyes when they realize they don’t have to face the trip alone, the gratitude in their voice after a conversation that brightens their day. “Some riders tell me it’s the first time they’ve been out of the house in weeks” he said. “One person told me, ‘I haven’t had that good of a time in a long time.’ Moments like that remind me why this matters.”
For Clayton, each ride is an opportunity to truly connect. He loves listening, trading stories, remembering, and laughing. One rider told him about hauling an enormous log stump on his truck decades ago, only to find it was four inches too tall to fit onto the ferry. The captain, seeing the predicament, simply said, “don’t worry about it, we’ll dock backwards.” Clayton chuckled as he retold the story, marveling at how these little glimpses of island life weave them all together.
Clayton’s kindness doesn’t stop when he turns off the ignition. This past Thanksgiving, he opened his home to fellow volunteers, caregivers, and their families, nine people gathered around his table. Some would have spent the day alone, but instead, they shared laughter, good food, and conversation that filled the room with warmth. “I wanted people to feel welcomed,” he said. “Everyone deserves a place where they feel seen and heard.”
Before moving to Whidbey, Clayton and his wife had volunteered occasionally with Habitat for Humanity, but it was on this island that volunteering became part of who he is. “it brings me joy knowing I can help someone not feel so isolated,” he reflected. “If I can make someone feel like they’re not on their own little island, that’s enough.”
Over time, Clayton has come to appreciate just how deeply Island Senior Resources touches lives, not only through meals and transportation, but through compassion that reminds people they belong. “It’s one of the most impactful organizations I’ve seen,” he said.
And because of volunteers like Clayton, that impact travels far, carried in every shared story, every comforting conversation, and every mile driven with care.
