The Thanks and The Giving: Two Parts That Belong Together
By Charles LaFond, Island Senior Resources
As a fundraiser at Island Senior Resources, I am deeply grateful for the gifts people give to help aging seniors and adults with disabilities—people like me. After 42 years in fundraising, I’ve learned one simple truth: grateful people are the ones who give. And those gifts make it possible for us to help neighbors who need support.
One day, you, gentle reader, and I may need that same help. And if not, we still live on islands, communities that thrive when we give locally. Gratitude is the wellspring of generosity.
A Holiday of Gratitude
This Thanksgiving, you might be surrounded by a boisterous family at a table overflowing with food. Or, like me, you might enjoy a quiet meal on a tray, watching parades and sipping eggnog (with plenty of nutmeg and maybe a dash of brandy—or was it the other way around?).
I love this holiday because it reminds me of something I practice every day: choosing gratitude.
Each morning, as hot water soothes my old shoulders, I speak my gratitudes out loud. My dog, Sugar, listens from the doorway, ears flipped up like an antenna when I say her name. Here are just a few things I’ve been thankful for recently:
- The volunteers who delivered Meals on Wheels when I was too ill to cook.
- SHIBA advisors who help me navigate retirement planning, Medicare, and Social Security.
- The Medical Lending Library that loaned me a walker, shower chair, and even a bright green scooter when standing was impossible.
- Community Meals that bring neighbors together (especially when Christopher makes Indian Butter Chicken!).
- Medical transportation that got me home safely after a doctor’s appointment that required anesthesia.
- The ISR’s Senior Thrift Store, where I find clothes I love—like the ones I’m wearing as I write this that fit my budget.
Gratitude in Action
I’m thankful for all Island Senior Resources has made possible in my life—and in the lives of thousands of others. That’s why I give. And right now, your gift will be matched by a generous donor, doubling its impact.
When I realized I was aging (September 12, to be exact), I knew I wanted to help others who are lucky enough to age too.
So this season, lift your cup of eggnog and toast with me. Here’s to the people who help our neighbors, here and everywhere on this planetary island we call home.
Join me in giving thanks—and giving back.
