The Importance of Juneteenth and July 4
June 19th (also known as Juneteenth), and July 4 (Independence Day) are national holidays of great importance to our culture, our communities in Island County, and to ISR.
Juneteenth is set aside to observe the emancipation of African Americans from slavery in the U.S. On June 19, 1856, Major General Gordon Granger of the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed slaves that the Civil War had ended and slavery had been abolished. This day stands as a powerful reminder of the long struggle for justice and the importance of recognizing the dignity and rights of all people. At Island Senior Resources, we are committed to being here for everyone—older adults, adults with disabilities, caregivers, and community members from all backgrounds.
July 4, Independence Day, marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and is a day to celebrate our democracy.
Island Senior Resources offices and services will be closed on Juneteenth. On July 4, ISR offices and services will be closed, and Senior Thrift will be open 10-3.
