More Than a Kitchen Remodel: Investing in Safety, Service, and Community

At Island Senior Resources (ISR), everything we do is centered on one core belief: our people matter. That includes the seniors we serve, the staff who show up every day, the volunteers who give their time, and the donors who make our work possible.

Our current kitchen renovation is more than a construction project, it’s a powerful reflection of that belief.

Why This Renovation Matters

This remodel will transform how our kitchen operates in ways that directly benefit both our team and the community we serve.

Improved efficiency and workflow

The redesigned kitchen layout will streamline how our team moves through the space, reducing unnecessary steps, saving time, and allowing us to use resources more effectively. Better flow means we can spend less time navigating and more time preparing meals.

Enhanced safety for staff

Safety is a top priority. Previously, limited visibility around corners meant staff had to call out while moving hot, heavy pans to avoid collisions. The new design eliminates these hazards. In addition, updated non-slip flooring will reduce the risk of trips and falls, creating a safer workplace for everyone.

Easier, more effective cleaning

Updated surfaces, including new flooring, walls, and stainless steel backsplashes, will improve sanitation and simplify daily cleaning routines, helping us maintain high standards in food safety.

A fresh, uplifting environment

Beyond functionality, the new space will feel bright, clean, and welcoming. A refreshed environment can have a powerful impact on morale, helping our kitchen team feel proud, energized, and supported in their work.

A more flexible dining experience

The renovation also includes changes to our dining area. A new café-style setup will allow diners to remain comfortably in the dining room while freeing up the Fireside Room for classes, meetings, and activities, enhancing program access for everyone.

A True Team Effort

This project is a testament to what we can accomplish together.

Our kitchen team has gone above and beyond, spending months preparing for this transition while continuing their daily workload. We are also deeply grateful to our donors, whose generosity has made this transformation possible.

Keeping Meals on Wheels Moving

Even with the kitchen temporarily closed, our commitment to serving seniors has not paused.

  • Our team prepared an incredible 7,500–8,000 additional frozen meals to ensure uninterrupted service.
  • That supply will sustain operations for approximately six weeks.
  • In one remarkable day, the team set a record—packing 667 frozen meals in a single 8-hour shift, on top of preparing our usual 300 hot meals.

Because of this advanced preparation, Meals on Wheels continues without disruption.

Project Progress

The renovation is moving forward smoothly and ahead of schedule in some areas:

  • Painters began earlier than planned thanks to the team completing preparations ahead of schedule.
  • Drywall and painting are nearing completion.
  • Flooring installation is set to begin soon, replacing old tile and carpet with safer, updated materials.

We remain on track to reopen our newly renovated kitchen and dining space in mid-June.

Looking Ahead

This remodel represents more than upgraded infrastructure, it’s an investment in people, safety, dignity, and service. It shows that ISR values every individual who walks through our doors or depends on our programs.

We can’t wait to welcome everyone back into a space that reflects the care and dedication at the heart of our mission.
