What Comes Around…
By Laura Roetcisoender, former Whidbey Island resident
About twenty years ago, while shopping at my favorite thrift store, Senior Thrift, in Freeland, WA, I saw a cute vest with fall colors which I thought would be perfect for the upcoming season. I noticed the tag said it was designed by “April Cornell” – I thought wow, it seems I’ll have something from someone famous!
Even though I have only worn it a few times, I enjoyed seeing it in my closet! Fast forward to the beginning of this month and I decided to sell it if anyone was interested. I contacted the April Cornell Company asking if anyone knew when it had been designed or sold, because I was thinking of selling it online.
The answer came back that April herself remembered it from the 1990’s and she wondered if I would be interested in selling it back to her? She offered me $50 which I thought was very generous! It was very exciting to me to sell it back to the woman who designed it!
Then it occurred to me that it would make a great “human interest” story because I have decided to donate part of the money I made back to Senior Thrift, where I purchased it from. I know that the store’s profits go towards helping seniors in the community of Whidbey Island and even though I no longer live there, I think it’s a fantastic service that they provide.
But first I thought I better make sure it was acceptable from Ms. Cornell’s perspective and yes, she gave me the ‘go ahead’ so here it is!
